Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
In 1987 Dr. Francine Shapiro discovered that patterns of induced rapid eye movements (like those occuring naturally during REM sleep) quickly reduced the intensity and
disturbance in thought and emotion caused by trauma and painful memories. This process often resulted in lasting relief. She and other clinicians later developed powerful
protocols that have been used world-wide for the treatment of severe trauma, disturbing and intrusive memories, fears and phobias, sexual abuse, panic attacks, stress
reduction, and depression. Today research studies are proving EMDR to be one of the most effective treatments (as rated by clients and clinicians alike) for trauma and
other disturbances of thought and emotion.
